Overview of Hazard Incidences in May 2023
In May 2023, twelve types of hazard incidents occurred across Bangladesh, including, Boat Capsized, Bridge Collapse, Covid-19, Cyclone, Dengue, Fire, Heat Wave, Land Slide, Lightening, Nor ‘wester, Riverbank Erosion, and Wild Animal Attacks. According to the daily newspaper 28 Lightning incidents are recorded which resulted in the cause of death toll of 37 people and 20 people were injured. With reference to the daily hazard situation report of MoDMR and DDM, a total 714 fire incidents took place across the country in May resulting in Eight people died, fourteen were injured, and several property damages were recorded such as shops, houses, family's houses, etc. The estimated losses were recorded as approximately 70 lakhs. Five Wild Animal Attack events took place on several dates in May which resulted in five deaths in different districts namely Mymensingh, Sherpur, Moulvibazar, Rangamati, Bandarban districts. On the other hand, one incident of Land Slide occurred at Sadarpur upazila in Faridpur where three workers were killed, and four others injured after the landslide. Based on the DGHS daily situation report, the confirmed cases and death of Dengue increased in May compared with April month. In May, just 9 districts suffered from dengue, and as usual Dhaka district reported the highest dengue infected patients. In May a total of 235 confirmed case was identified and total death toll was two. According to sDDM, a total of 4 districts, 26 Upazilas (sub-districts), 99 unions, and 429,337 Bangladeshi nationals were affected by the cyclone Mocha.
A Bridge Collapsed happened at Pirgacha upazila in Rangpur resulted communication system disruption and it disconnected 250,000 people from 60 villages across five unions in Pirgacha upazila. One incident of Boat Capsized happened in Rajbari district. Due to Boat Capsized, about 1 lakh taka loss was reported. In the district of Shariatpur and Pirojpur, two incidents of Riverbank Erosion occurred which caused many infrastructural, crops land damages.
In this month, three nor ‘wester incidents hit in Dhaka and Rangpur and Satkhira. In Rangpur about One thousand houses were damaged and many plants were uprooted at Pirgacha and Kaunia Upazila of the district. Covid-19 affected a total number of 110 people in 20 districts in May 2023. According to the national report published by DGHS in May 2023, due to Covid-19 no death is reported and 613 recovered. Besides, the country has experienced a total of four different levels of heat wave in 64 districts where mild, mild to moderate, and extreme heat wave. The maximum temperature was recorded at 41.2 degrees Celsius at Chuadanga during heat wave situations on 9 May 2023. No casualties were recorded due to the heat wave.
